I was talking to a friend who is starting their own business and she wanted to know where she should start. I told her after registering her business she should buy a domain name.
Now I don’t sell domain names, yet. I did provide her with some advice on how to choose the perfect domain name for her new business.
Step #1: Make a list of potential domain names
Making a list of potential domain names is important because you want to vet each one. Every domain name idea won’t make sense when you find out the name is unavailable or it isn’t easy to remember.
- Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to help:
- Is the name available?
- Are there hyphens in the name? If so, remove them!
- Is the name easy to remember?
- Does the name speak to your business?
Step #2: Consider leveraging your social community
If you have a large following on social media you could use your profile name as an option. How do you know if your social media handle is the right fit? Consider the following:
- Does my social profile tag meet the points expressed above?
- Does my social profile tag relate to the business I’m starting?
Step #3: Choose the best hosting company and register
Once you’ve decided on the best domain name, it’s time to choose a company to register with. Start a search on Google by typing in the search bar, “register my domain name”. You will find the list is enormous but if you stick to the companies on the first page, you should be good.
Conclusion
I know everything I broke down may seem overwhelming, but it shouldn’t be. Take it one step at a time.
My friend made it through the steps and found it to be the best process you could’ve executed. She now has, what she feels to be, the best domain name for her business.
I hope this helps.
